Superior Stone & Cabinet carries and installs both prefabricated granite and granite slabs. We’ve seen customers happy with both types. tell the difference between prefabricated granite and granite slab once each is installed. If the countertop has bullnose edging, they may be able to guess that it is prefabricated, but—otherwise—all bets are off. If anything, granite quality is determined by the cost and origin of the granite—not the manufacturing style. This is why it’s important to work with a reputable, local installer. Since prefabricated granite is mass-produced with no customization, it’s generally less expensive than a custom granite slab.

Sand only to your scribe line, keeping the belt sander at 90 degrees or more to the top of the backsplash as shown. Set your scribing tool to the width of the widest gap along each wall. Apply masking tape to the top of the backsplash and use your scribe to mark the entire length of each countertop. Scribe to each wall, adjusting your scribing tool each time for the largest gap on that wall.

I did learn that the slabs are only about $400 per 8′ long piece, which sounds like an amazing deal! , but then they need to be fabricated so the labor adds more cost. However, all of that savings in materials means that this is a way cheaper option in most cases.

However, just because they cost a bit less does not mean that it is not granite. Rather, prefab granite counters are granite; they have merely been made from slabs of granite that have been pre-cut and refinished in a central factory and then shipped to a dealer to be sold. Prefab countertops are pre-cut to standard sizes, so they can be manufactured in large quantities. Therefore, they are significantly cheaper than custom slabs.
